Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need an in-home estimate?

Long distance moves are based on weight and mileage.  The miles portion of the equation is easy to figure, but calculating weight requires some expertise.  We have computer software that helps us measure your items in small chunks and then aggregate those findings into a total shipment weight.  Over 75 years of experience in the field of estimating leads to some pretty amazing results.  Our accuracy in estimating weight (with the help of the computer software) enables us to give a guaranteed price while we are at your home.  There is no waiting to find out how much it will cost to move.  We will print out and sign a to-the-penny price before we leave.  The guaranteed price eliminates pricing surprises while your goods are in transit.  We like to price all of our moves that way unless the customer requests a different method.  But, we have to be able to get some expert eyes on your items that you are shipping so that we can offer this pricing structure.  Be leery of any mover who guarantees a price without looking at your belongings.  Without seeing what is being shipped, it is likely that the mover will try to renegotiate the price or you may be paying too much in the first place and the mover is certain that he/she will make money no matter how many things you have.  Neither of those are results that most consumers would enjoy and this is why we strictly adhere to the in-home survey.

Should I use an agent for a major van line when I move?

Absolutely.  When a van line selects a company as an authorized agent, the van line carefully screens the company to maintain strength in the van line brand.  A van line’s brand is very important and it is very difficult to become part of a van line family.  If you hire a van line agent to move your items, you can be sure that there is significant impetus for that company to fully perform all stipulations in the moving agreement.  This van line driven performance dynamic does not exist with a non-affiliated moving company.  Allied Van Lines has over 450 agents in North America that depend on each other to uphold the brand standard that Allied Agents have created year after year.  Action Moving Services strives to be an exemplary member of the Allied Van Lines agent family so that our customers choose Allied for their next move.

When is the best time to move?

Action Moving Services strives to provide our customers with the best possible experience no matter when you move, but it is easier to give more personal attention during the slower times. The summer months are the busiest across the moving industry, but if you have to move during the summer, there are a few tricks to avoid the very busiest times. One is to avoid the end of the month. Also, mid-week seems to be less busy than the beginning or end of the week. If you are moving locally, try for a weekday to avoid overtime rates.

When should I start getting estimates from moving companies?

As soon as you know you will be moving. This will help ensure scheduling your move on your ideal dates. Having more time to plan will also help with making adjustments due to budget or space in your new residence.

What does the move coordinator do during our appointment?

The move coordinator will take a physical survey of all the items that need to be moved. He or she will bring a laptop computer with specialized software that will help them determine the weight of your shipment. At the end of the appointment the move coordinator will print and sign an estimate with a guaranteed price. He or she will discuss which services you will need, such as packing, vehicle transport, etc. He or she will be sensitive to your moving budget and make suggestions that will help you stay within it. Your move coordinator will also give you tips for packing and handling your most delicate items. Keep in mind the appointment can take an hour or two, so allow enough time in your schedule.

Can I leave things in my desk or dresser drawers?

It is a good use of space to leave soft items, such as linens in your drawers. Keep in mind that during the move process, furniture might be turned on end to get it out of your residence. Anything that is heavy, or that could be damaged or damage the furniture it is in should be packed. This will also prevent small items from spilling out and becoming lost.

Can I move my plants?

You can, but it is not ideal. Plants need water and sunlight, which will not be available in a moving truck. Our trucks are not temperature controlled either, so they can get very cold or hot, depending on the season. We can make arrangements to ship your plants in a temperature controlled vehicle, but that is usually cost prohibitive. Talk with your move coordinator at the time of your survey and see what options are available and what makes the most sense given the size and value of your plants.

What should I do with my jewelry and other valuables?

We can ship any valuables and your move team will properly inventory them at origin making them easy to find at destination. However, some customers choose to take things such as jewelry and items such as laptops or ipods with them in their car or suitcase. Use your discretion and do what feels most comfortable to you.

How do I prepare my appliances for moving day?

Generally it is best to have them unplugged, emptied out and ready to load on moving day, but each model and type of appliance have their own requirements. Ask your move coordinator when they are at your residence if you have any questions or concerns.

What do I need to do to have my home prepared for moving day?

Everything should be packed and ready to be loaded. If you had a full-service pack, this will have already been done by the movers. The driver will do a "walk-through" with you and inventory all your belongings. Set aside and clearly mark everything that you do not want loaded on the moving truck (sticky notes work well for that). Pets should be secured and kept from under foot. Also, if there is ice or snow on the ground please have a path cleared for the movers.

How will I know what time my driver will arrive?

Allied drivers are required to call at least 24 hours in advance to set up time of arrival. If you have not received a call, feel free to call your Move Coordinator and they will be happy to contact the driver and find out for you.

How and when do I pay?

The most common way is to pay half at the time of loading and half at the time of delivery, but the move must be paid in full at time of delivery. We accept all major credit cards--Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover, as well as cashiers checks. Ask your move coordinator if you have any concerns.
